ITR filing for government and PSU employees

A public-sector career runs from salary through to pension, and each stage has its own entries in the return. This page walks through them.

In short

Salary, pension, perquisites and retirement benefits for public-sector staff.

Your tax situation

  • Salary and perquisites

Housing, vehicles and other perquisites are valued by rule and added to your salary. Your Form 16 shows the total.

  • Pension

Pension is taxed as salary, with a standard deduction of ₹75,000 in the new regime.

  • Retirement benefits

Gratuity and leave encashment at retirement can be partly or wholly exempt, depending on the rules that apply to you. The exempt part is not taxed.

  • Family

Many people file for a spouse or parent as well. Each person files their own return under their own PAN.

What to watch out for

  • Retirement year

In the year you retire your return holds salary, benefits and pension together. Check each against your Form 16.

  • Interest on savings

Interest on deposits is taxable and listed in your AIS even when your salary is already taxed.

  • Dates

The due date for most returns is 31-Jul-2026.
