ITR filing for IT professionals

A job switch, a stock grant that vested, a house you rent: a salary can look simple on payslips and still end up as a return with several parts. Here is what usually turns up and how it is handled.

In short

Several employers in a year, stock-based pay, assets abroad and a choice of regime.

Your tax situation

  • More than one employer in a year

Each employer issues its own Form 16 and deducts tax as if you earned only their salary. Your return has to add them up, and the tax you owe or get back is worked out on the total.

  • ESOPs and RSUs from an Indian employer

When stock vests or you exercise options, its value is taxed as part of your salary and shows in your Form 16. A later sale is a separate matter and is taxed as a capital gain.

  • Stock from a foreign employer or accounts abroad

Shares of a foreign company, a foreign brokerage account or a bank account outside India all have to be reported, and income from them is taxed here when you are a resident.

  • Rent and the regime choice

House rent allowance helps only in the old regime. The new regime gives a standard deduction of ₹75,000 on salary but no HRA claim. Which one is lower depends on your numbers.

What to watch out for

  • Tax already deducted is not the tax you owe

After a switch, the second employer may not know what the first paid. Compare the total tax deducted with the tax on your total income before you file.

  • Vesting and sale are two events

Count the stock once as salary when it vests and again, only for the change in price, when you sell it.

  • Foreign holdings rule out the simple form

Assets or income outside India mean ITR-1 is not available to you. Keep year-end statements for each account.

  • Dates

The due date for most salaried returns is 31-Jul-2026.

How TaxCare handles it

  1. Every employer, from your recordsTaxCare fetches your AIS, TIS and Form 26AS or Form 168 from the Income Tax portal, so each employer's salary and tax deducted are already there.
  2. Both regimes worked outYour tax is calculated under the old and the new regime on your own figures, with HRA where the old regime allows it. You see the difference before you choose.
  3. Gaps shown before you fileInterest, dividends and sales in your AIS that your return does not yet include are listed for you to confirm.

When a Tax Expert files it

Income or assets outside India, a remittance from abroad and tax on start-up stock options that is deferred to a later year are filed by a verified TaxCare Tax Expert, not through self-filing. The price is shown before you book.

Questions people ask

I changed jobs. Do I file once or twice?

Once. One return covers every employer of the year, using each Form 16 and your AIS.

Where do my RSUs appear?

The value at vesting is part of salary in your Form 16. A sale shows up later as a capital gain.

I have a foreign brokerage account. Can I self-file?

That return goes to a Tax Expert in TaxCare, because foreign assets and income need disclosures that self-filing does not cover.
