Income tax calculator: old vs new regime
Enter your income and deductions once. We work out your tax under both regimes with the same rules the TaxCare app files with, and show which one costs you less. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How the calculator works
Old vs new regime: what differs
Both regimes tax the same income. They differ in the slab rates and in which deductions they allow.
- The new regime has lower slab rates and is the default. It allows almost no deductions: no Section 80C, no 80D, no HRA and no interest on a home-loan for a home you live in.
- Salaried people and pensioners get a standard deduction in both: ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old one (Tax Year 2026-27).
- With the Section 87A rebate there is no tax in the new regime up to a taxable income of ₹12,00,000; in the old regime the limit is ₹5,00,000 (Tax Year 2026-27).
- The old regime keeps the familiar deductions: Section 80C investments up to ₹1,50,000, health insurance under Section 80D, interest of up to ₹2,00,000 on a loan for the home you live in, and more.
Which regime should you pick?
It depends on how much you can claim as deductions. A few rules of thumb:
- With few deductions, the new regime usually costs less.
- With large deductions (full 80C, health insurance, home-loan interest, NPS) the old regime can still win. The calculator tells you how much more in deductions it would take.
- Salaried people can pick the regime each year when they file. With business income, switching back and forth is limited, so decide with care.
What the calculator assumes
It is built for a resident individual and uses the same tax engine as the TaxCare app.
- Slab rates, the Section 87A rebate and its marginal relief, surcharge and its marginal relief, and the health and education cess all come from the rules for the Tax Year you pick.
- Deduction limits (80C, 80D, 80CCD(1B), home-loan interest and the rest) are applied for you. Enter what you actually paid.
- HRA and other salary exemptions are not included; both regimes are worked out on your full salary.
- Capital gains, business income and crypto are not part of this calculator. The TaxCare app handles them when you file.
- Section numbers are the familiar ones from the Income-tax Act, 1961. From Tax Year 2026-27 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies, and the arithmetic follows it.
- Everything is worked out in your browser. The calculator never sends your figures to TaxCare's servers. They are kept only in your browser on this device, one saved form per Tax Year, so a refresh does not lose them, and they are used for nothing else. They stay until you press Clear all (which clears the Tax Year shown) or clear your browser data.
Questions about the calculator
Is the calculator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no payment. Open the page and start typing.
Is what I type sent anywhere?
Not to TaxCare. The arithmetic runs in your browser, and your figures are kept only in your browser on this device so a refresh does not lose them. They stay until you press Clear all or clear your browser data.
How accurate is the estimate?
It uses the same tax engine as the TaxCare app, with the slab rates, Section 87A rebate, surcharge and cess for the Tax Year you pick. It is still an estimate: HRA, other salary exemptions, capital gains and business income are not included, and your actual tax depends on your full return.
Which regime applies if I do not choose one?
The new regime is the default. Salaried people can choose the old regime each year when they file, if it costs them less; with business income, switching is limited.
Which Tax Years does it cover?
Tax Years 2026-27, 2025-26 and 2024-25. Pick the year at the top of the calculator; a year whose rules are not yet signed off is marked provisional.
Ready to file your return?
TaxCare fetches your AIS and TDS from the Income Tax portal and prepares your return in the regime that saves you more.
