Income-tax Act, 2025: the new law · Tax Year 2026-27
New section numbers: old to new mapping
The Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbers the sections and forms you knew. See how TDS and TCS sections map from the 1961 Act to the 2025 Act, which codes were omitted, and how forms like Form 16 and Form 26AS are renamed.

The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from the tax year 2026-27. It renumbers the Act and gathers many of the separate TDS and TCS sections into tables. For example, salary TDS moves from section 192 to section 392, and most other resident TDS sections (193, 194, 194A, 194C and so on) move into the table in section 393(1). TCS moves from 206C to section 394.
This guide covers only the mappings published in the AIS Handbook (May 2026) that TaxCare has transcribed: TDS and TCS information categories and the reporting forms. It does not cover other parts of the Act such as Chapter VI-A deductions (80C, 80D) or the rebate. For those, read the text of the Act on the Income Tax Department's website.
How the numbering works
Old (1961 Act) | New (2025 Act) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
192 | 392 | Salary |
192A | 392(7) | Accumulated PF balance paid by employer |
193, 194, 194A, 194C, 194H, 194I, 194J and others | 393(1), by serial number in a table | Payments to residents |
195, 196A to 196D | 393(2), by serial number in a table | Payments to non-residents |
194B, 194BB, 194BA, 194EE, 194G, 194N, 194T | 393(3), by serial number in a table | Winnings, lottery commission, NSS withdrawals, cash withdrawals, partner payments |
206C and sub-sections | 394(1), by serial number in a table | Tax collected at source |
196 | 393(5) | Sums payable to government |
So a single section number is replaced by a section plus a serial number in a table. A row in the AIS may read 393(1)[Table: S.No. 5(i)]. That is TDS on interest from others, which was section 193.
A few common mappings
Old | New | Category |
|---|---|---|
192 | 392 | Salary |
193 | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 5(i)] | Interest from others (securities) |
194A | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 5(ii) and 5(iii)] | Interest from deposits |
194 | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 7] | Dividend |
194C | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 6(i)] | Contractor payments |
194J | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 6(iii)] | Professional and technical fees |
194H | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 1(ii)] | Commission |
194I(b) | 393(1) [Table: S.No. 2(ii).D(b)] | Rent for land, building, furniture |
194N | 393(3) [Table: S.No. 5] | Cash withdrawals |
195 | 393(2) [Table: S.No. 17] | Foreign remittances |
206CA | 394(1) [Table: S.No. 1] | Business expenses (the handbook's category for TCS) |
The handbook labels 194C, 194J and 194H all as "Business receipts"; the descriptions in the right-hand column are common names, not the handbook's labels.
For a longer list, see the TDS section finder.
Sections with no new code
The handbook marks some information categories as omitted under the 2025 Act:
Old section | Category |
|---|---|
194LD | Interest on bonds and government securities |
194F | Repurchase of units by mutual funds or UTI |
206CR | TCS (business expenses) |
206CK, 206CM, 206CN | TCS on cash payments |
206CP | TCS (outward remittance or purchase of foreign currency) |
"Omitted" here means the handbook shows no 2025-Act code for the category. The table does not say whether the underlying payment is covered elsewhere in the 2025 Act.
Forms renamed under the 2026 Rules
Purpose | 1962 Rules | 2026 Rules |

Form 15G and 15H become Form 121, and the lower or nil deduction certificate under section 197 becomes section 395. Late-filing fee under section 234E becomes section 427, and interest under section 220(2) becomes section 411.
What changes for you
For most salaried taxpayers, the practical changes are:
- Your TDS statement is Form 168, not Form 26AS, from 2026-27. See Form 168: the new annual TDS statement.
- The TDS certificate from your employer is Form 130 under the new rules.
- Section numbers in AIS and Form 168 look different, and Form 168 uses four-digit codes.
- The tax year is the only term: the 2025 Act speaks of the tax year.
The 2026-27 return is filed in 2027. Until the department publishes the forms and utilities, TaxCare treats the 2026-27 figures as provisional.
