Refund reissue request: how to raise it
If your income tax refund failed or was returned by your bank, you can ask the department to issue it again. Here is what to check first, what to prepare and how to follow up.
On this page
A refund reissue request is how you ask the Income Tax Department to pay a refund again after the first attempt failed, for example because the bank account was closed, was wrong or was not validated. First check your refund status and bank details, then raise the request on the Income Tax portal. TaxCare cannot raise it for you or promise a date.
On the portal the facility is Services > Refund Reissue. It is open to registered users who have filed a return with a refund failure, and it needs a bank account validated on the portal plus a way to e-verify the request (Aadhaar OTP, EVC through a bank or demat account or net banking, or a DSC).
Step 0: Confirm the refund really failed
Refund Status in TaxCare shows what the department has recorded for each tax year: issued, paid, failed or adjusted against dues. Before you raise a request, confirm the status:
Status | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
Paid | Money has been credited | Check your bank statement and passbook |
Issued | Sent to your bank | Wait a few days, then ask your bank |
Failed | The refund could not be credited | Fix the cause, then request a reissue |
Adjusted against dues | Set off against a demand | Check the demand notice |
A refund is processed only after your return is e-verified. If the return is not verified, there is no refund to reissue. See how to e-verify your ITR.
Common reasons a refund fails
- The bank account number or IFSC in the return is wrong.
- The account is closed or inactive.
- The account is not validated on the portal or not linked to your PAN.
- The account holder's name does not match.
- The account is frozen, under litigation, or of a type that cannot take a refund (refunds go to savings, current, cash credit, overdraft or NRO accounts).
What to prepare
- Your PAN and the tax year of the return.
- The acknowledgement number of the return. TaxCare keeps your acknowledgement and filed ITR in Download ITR.
- The correct bank account in your own name, with account number and IFSC.
- A way to e-verify the request: Aadhaar OTP, EVC or DSC. The manual lists no documents to upload. If your account shows "Validation cannot be done", the department allows you either to add an account with an e-Filing-integrated bank or to submit an ECS mandate form with the reissue request.
- The refund status screen or the intimation, showing the failure.
Steps to raise the request
- Sign in to the e-Filing portal with your user ID and password.
- Make sure your bank account is validated under My Profile > My Bank Account.
- On the Dashboard, go to Services > Refund Reissue.
- Click Create Refund Reissue Request, select the record and click Continue.
- On Select a bank account, choose the account and click Proceed to Verification.
- On the e-Verify page, choose a verification option and continue.
- Note the Transaction ID shown on success. A confirmation also goes to your registered email and mobile.
- Track the request on View Refund Reissue Request.
Interest while you wait
If a refund is paid late, the department pays interest of 0.5% per month in TaxCare's rules for the tax year 2025-26. No interest is paid if the refund is less than 10% of the tax determined.
The 2026-27 figures are provisional: they carry forward the 2025-26 values and have not been signed off against the Income-tax Act, 2025.
Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 refund interest is in section 437: 0.5% for every month or part of a month until the refund is granted. If the delay is attributable to you, for example because of wrong bank details, that period is left out.
If your refund was adjusted against a demand
An "adjusted" status means the department has set your refund against a demand, perhaps from another year. You do not need a reissue. Check the demand under Pending Actions > Response to Outstanding Demand and say whether you agree or disagree, in full or in part. If you do not respond, the demand is confirmed and adjusted against your refund.
Following up
- Check the status regularly for a few weeks after raising the request.
- If the money is shown as paid but you do not see it, ask your bank for the credit details.
- If nothing moves, a Tax Expert can follow up with the department on your behalf. See Tax Experts and pricing.
TaxCare refunds are different
Do not confuse an income tax refund with a refund of a TaxCare charge. A refund from the department is paid by the department to your bank. Refunds for TaxCare services follow TaxCare's refund policy. See the refund policy.
How TaxCare helps
TaxCare shows the refund stages for your return and for family members you have added. It reminds you to e-verify and keeps your acknowledgement and filed ITR ready to download, which you need for any follow-up. It does not issue refunds and cannot make the department reissue faster. See also income tax refund status and delays.

Questions on this topic
When do I need a refund reissue request?
When the department has issued a refund but it failed, for example because of a closed or wrong bank account, and you have not received the money.
Can I choose a different bank account?
Yes. The request shows only accounts validated on the portal; to use another account, add and validate it first with Add Bank Account.
Will I get interest for the delay?
Interest is 0.5% per month until the refund is granted, with conditions. A period of delay caused by your own wrong bank details is left out.
How long will a reissued refund take?
TaxCare cannot promise a date. The department processes requests on its own schedule.
