TDS not showing in Form 26AS or Form 168: what to do
If tax was deducted from your income but does not appear in Form 26AS or Form 168, check the deductor's PAN details and timing, then ask the deductor to correct their TDS return. Here are the steps.
On this page
If TDS was deducted from your income but does not show in Form 26AS (tax years up to 2025-26) or Form 168 (from 2026-27), the usual cause is on the deductor's side: the TDS return is not yet filed, was filed with a wrong PAN, or has errors. Check the basics, contact the deductor, and ask them to correct the return. You cannot edit the statement yourself.
Why your tax credit comes from the statement
The credit for TDS is what appears against your PAN in Form 26AS or Form 168. TaxCare takes the tax credit from these statements and cross-checks income against the AIS and TIS. Your Form 16 or a bank certificate is your proof of what was deducted, but the statement is what the department's system reads.
Common reasons TDS is missing
Reason | What to check |
|---|---|
TDS return not filed yet | The deductor files returns quarter by quarter. The last quarter often appears later. |
Wrong PAN quoted | Your PAN on the Form 16, bank record or invoice |
Wrong TAN or section | The deductor's TAN and the section on the certificate |
Different tax year | The deduction is shown under another year |
Deductor did not deposit the tax | Ask the deductor for the challan details |
Statement not yet updated | Check again after some days |
Step by step
- Pick the right statement. Form 26AS for the tax years up to 2025-26, Form 168 from 2026-27. In Form 168, each TDS row shows a four-digit section code (1001 to 1092).
- Search by deductor. Check whether the deductor appears at all, perhaps under another quarter or a different amount.
- Check your own documents. Compare your PAN, the deductor's name and TAN, and the amount on your Form 16, Form 16A or bank certificate.
- Check the AIS. The AIS may carry the entry even when it is not yet in the statement. See what is the Annual Information Statement.
- Contact the deductor. Ask them to confirm they filed a TDS return and that your PAN was quoted correctly. If not, ask them to file or correct it.
- Wait for the update, then check again.
- Keep the proof. Keep the deduction certificate and emails with the deductor.
Examples
- Salary TDS missing: your employer deducted TDS in the last quarter, but its return is filed later. Ask the employer's payroll team. See how to read your Form 16.
- Bank interest TDS missing: the bank's certificate shows TDS but the statement does not. Ask the bank to check the return for your PAN.
- Professional fee TDS missing: your client deducted tax but quoted a wrong PAN. Ask the client to correct it.
Should you file now or wait?
Your due date does not move because a statement is incomplete.
- If the TDS is only delayed and the due date is far, wait and check again.
- If the due date is near, file with the TDS that shows in the statement, and consider a revised return after the deductor corrects the entry. A revised return can be filed until 31 March after the tax year ends, from the tax year 2025-26, with a fee of ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5,00,000) for a revision after 31 December.
If you do not claim TDS that was actually deducted, you may pay tax twice or lose a refund until it is corrected. See ITR due dates for the tax year 2026-27.
What if the TDS is in the statement but wrong?
- A different amount: ask the deductor to correct the return.
- An entry that is not yours: it may carry another person's PAN. Report it to the deductor.
- An AIS entry you disagree with: you can give feedback on the AIS. Feedback does not change Form 26AS or Form 168.
Check your numbers before you file
- Add up the TDS in your Form 16, bank certificates and other certificates.
- Add up the TDS in your Form 26AS or Form 168.
- Explain any difference in a note.
- File using the statement's figures, unless a Tax Expert advises otherwise.
