How to give feedback on wrong AIS entries
If your AIS shows income that is wrong, duplicate or not yours, you can give feedback on the entry. Learn the feedback options, how the source responds, how the value changes in TIS, and what to do while you wait.
On this page
If an AIS entry is wrong, duplicated or relates to someone else, give feedback on it on the portal. Choose an option such as "information is not fully correct", "relates to other PAN or year" or "duplicate", and add the right value. The source may confirm or deny your feedback, and the result decides the figure in your TIS, which pre-fills your return.
The steps below follow the department's AIS Handbook. Menu names on the portal can change, so follow the screen you see.
When to give feedback
Give feedback when an AIS entry:
- Shows an amount higher or lower than what you actually received.
- Belongs to another person (a PAN that is not yours) or to another tax year.
- Is repeated: the same dividend or interest appears under two sources.
- Is a transaction that never happened.
- Is correct, but you want to confirm it (optional).
Do not give feedback just because you disagree with how an item is taxed. Feedback is about the facts of what was reported.
The feedback options
Option | Use it when |
|---|---|
Information is correct | The entry is right |
Information is not fully correct | The figure or a detail is wrong; you give the right value |
Information relates to other PAN or year | The entry is not yours, or is for another tax year |
Information is duplicate or included in other information | The same item is reported twice |
Information is denied | The transaction did not happen |
Customised feedback | Some categories offer their own options |
Customised options exist only for some categories.
Step by step
- Open your AIS for the tax year. See how to download and read your AIS.
- Find the entry. Feedback is recorded on each individual transaction row. Even if you give it in bulk, it is stored row by row.
- Choose the option that fits.
- Enter the correct value if the option needs one, with a short reason.
- Submit and note the reference.
- Check back later to see whether the source responded.
What happens next
- Your feedback shows against the entry as a modified value, next to the value reported by the source.
- The source can confirm or deny negative feedback. If it denies, the source's value is restored in TIS.
- Feedback that looks risky, such as marking a large item as not yours, is flagged for the source to confirm.
- In TIS, the column "value accepted by taxpayer / confirmed by source" reflects the outcome. That is the figure used to pre-fill your return.
Duplicates: what the department already does
Where the same income is reported twice, for example a dividend reported both through a TDS statement and through a financial-transaction statement, the system itself marks the lower one as a duplicate at the source level. You do not need to give feedback on that. Check whether the TIS total looks right instead.
What to do while you wait
Do not wait for a response before filing unless the deadline allows. File the correct figure:
- If the AIS overstates your income and you are sure, report the correct income and keep proof (bank statement, contract note, a letter from the source).
- If the AIS understates it, report the higher actual income.
- If the source later denies your feedback, the department's record will show the difference. Be ready to explain with your documents.
Fixing the problem at the source
Feedback records your view; the real fix is at the source. If a bank has reported interest wrongly or an employer has reported the wrong salary, ask them to file a corrected statement. Then the AIS updates. For TDS credits, the deductor must correct the statement for Form 26AS or Form 168 to change.
Evidence to keep
- Bank statements and passbook copies.
- Contract notes and capital gains statements. See capital gains statement from your broker.
- Form 16 and TDS certificates. See Form 16 does not match AIS.
- Emails or letters to and from the source.
How TaxCare helps
TaxCare compares your AIS, TIS and Form 26AS or Form 168 with your return and shows each row that does not match, so you know which entries to question. It takes the higher income figure as a starting point and leaves the decision to you. A Tax Expert can advise on a disputed entry. See pricing and what is AIS.

Questions on this topic
What feedback options does the AIS give?
Information is correct; not fully correct; relates to another PAN or year; duplicate or included in other information; information is denied; and customised feedback for some categories.
Does feedback delete the entry?
No. The entry stays, with the value reported by the source and your modified value side by side. If the source confirms the original, its value is restored in TIS.
Do I need to give feedback on every entry?
No. Only on entries that are wrong or not yours. Entries that are correct need no action, although you can mark them correct.
Can I file my return before the source responds?
You can. File the correct figure. Keep proof of why the entry is wrong in case of a query.
