TDS rate chart for the tax year 2026-27

A reference chart of the common TDS sections for the tax year 2026-27, with the old (1961 Act) section code and the new (2025 Act) code side by side, plus how to read the codes in your AIS and Form 168. Rates and thresholds are to be added after review.

On this page

For the tax year 2026-27, TDS is governed by the Income-tax Act, 2025. Salary TDS is section 392; most TDS on payments to residents sits in section 393(1); TDS on payments to non-residents in 393(2); TDS on winnings, cash withdrawals and partner payments in 393(3); and tax collected at source (TCS) in 394(1). This chart maps each common 1961 section to its new code.

Important: this chart lists the section codes only, not the rates or thresholds. For the rate and threshold of each section, use the Income Tax Department's official TDS rates chart and the text of section 393 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.

Two TDS sections of the 1961 Act have no counterpart in the 2025 Act: 194LD (interest on bonds and government securities) and 194F (repurchase of units by mutual funds). They are marked "Omitted" in the department's own table.

The descriptions in the left column are the AIS category names from the department's handbook, not the Act's own wording.

Tax collected at source (TCS)

TCS sections 206C and its sub-sections move to 394(1), with table entries for items such as vehicle purchases (394(1) Table S.No. 6), luxury goods (6(b)), foreign remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (7D) and foreign tour packages (8). Five TCS codes, 206CR, 206CK, 206CM, 206CN and 206CP, are omitted.

How to read the codes in Form 168

In Form 168, each TDS row carries a four-digit TRACES code, not the section. The statement's own legend maps the code to the section and a description.

For a year up to 2025-26, Form 26AS shows the 1961 section itself, such as 192 or 194A. See Form 26AS vs Form 168.

How the tax credit works

The TDS deducted from you is a credit against your tax. You claim only the credit shown in Form 26AS (up to the tax year 2025-26) or Form 168 (from 2026-27). If the deductor did not file its statement, the credit does not show, whatever your certificate says. Compare the certificate, the statement and the AIS. See Form 16 does not match AIS.

Certificates also change names: Form 16 (salary) becomes Form 130, and Form 16A becomes Form 131. A person can ask the bank for no deduction by a declaration, which is Form 121 (earlier 15G or 15H).

Not to be confused with special tax rates

Some income is taxed at a flat rate in the return, which is different from the rate of TDS. In TaxCare's provisional rules for 2026-27 (carried forward from 2025-26): short-term gains on listed shares 20%, long-term gains on listed shares 12.5% above ₹1,25,000, virtual digital assets 30%, and lottery and online game winnings 30%. These rates are provisional until TaxCare signs off its 2026-27 rule set against the Finance Act. The rate at which TDS is deducted on these may be different.

If TDS was cut at a higher rate or not deposited

Check your PAN is correct with the deductor. If TDS is not shown in your Form 168 or Form 26AS, ask the deductor to file or correct its statement. A deductor can deduct at a lower rate, or none, only against a certificate from the department under section 395 (formerly section 197).

How TaxCare helps

TaxCare brings in your Form 26AS or Form 168 and your AIS, shows each TDS row with its section code, and matches them with your Form 16 and your return, so the credit you claim is the credit the department holds. It picks Form 26AS or Form 168 by tax year. See what is AIS and pricing.

Questions on this topic

Which Act governs TDS for the tax year 2026-27?

The Income-tax Act, 2025. TDS on salary is section 392, most other resident TDS is in section 393(1), non-resident TDS in 393(2), and TDS on winnings, cash withdrawals and similar in 393(3). TCS is in section 394.

Where can I see the TDS deducted from me?

In Form 168 (from the tax year 2026-27) or Form 26AS (up to 2025-26), and in Part B1 of your AIS.

Why does my Form 168 show a four-digit number instead of a section?

Each row carries a TRACES code from 1001 to 1092. A legend in the statement maps the code to the section and its description.

Are the rates the same as before?

This page does not state rates. The Income Tax Department publishes the rates and thresholds for each section on its TDS rates page, which this guide links to. The department's transition FAQs say the rates and thresholds were retained from the 1961 Act, but always read the rate for your payment from the official chart.
